Terrorist attack in poonch: The terrorists were armed with AK assault rifles and are believed to have fled into the nearby forest.
One soldier was killed and five were injured in J&K‘s Poonch on Saturday after their security vehicles were fired upon by terrorists.
The officials said the firing was reported from the Sanai village of Surankote and reinforcements from the Army and police have been rushed to the area. A gunfight ensued between the suspected terrorists and security forces near a government higher secondary school in Gursai Moori of Medhat sub-division in Poonch.
The injured soldiers were taken to Udhampur Command Hospital where one succumbed to his injuries.
“An Indian Air Force convoy came under attack by militants in J&K’s Poonch district near Shahshitar. Local army forces are currently conducting cordon-off and search operations in the area. The convoy has been secured. Further investigation is underway,” the IAF said in a statement.
When the terrorists armed with AK assault rifles opened fire, several bullets penetrated the front and side windows, hitting one of the trucks in the convoy and fleeing into the nearby woods. It appears that he did so, officials said.
Local Rashtriya Rifles forces have set up a cordon and started search operations in the area. The vehicle was secured within the general area of the air base near Chassitel. Voting is scheduled to be held on May 25 in
Poonch, which is part of Anantnag-Rajouri-Poonch Lok Sabha constituency, where elections had been postponed by the EC.

Earlier, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Samba district were put on high alert after security forces foiled a possible infiltration along the border in Samba district.
The intruder was shot dead by the military early Wednesday morning as he tried to approach the BSF fence at the border.
“On the night of May 1-2, 2024, alert BSF troops observed suspicious movements across the IB in the Samba border area and detected intruders approaching the BSF fence. The Border Guard said in an official press release that its vigilant forces neutralized the intruders and “thwarted the infiltration attempt.”
