According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck at 12:36 a.m. (17:36 GMT). The epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean about five miles west of the Atikipa district in Caraveri province, about 370 miles south of the capital, Lima, near the border between Chile and Bolivia. The quake was measured at a depth of 17 miles.

The Peruvian Navy’s Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation reported that the earthquake had prompted a tsunami warning for the Peruvian coast. But the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu said the threat of a tsunami had passed.

Peru is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” which means earthquakes are common in the country.
