In one incident in St Luke’s Road, Southport, rioters set a van on fire and threw bricks at police officers.

The group, believed to be members of the English Defence League (EDL), also threw objects at a local mosque.

Another protest at Liverpool’s Pier Head on Saturday also ended violently.

Officers were wearing riot gear when a large mob attacked officers with bricks and other debris.

Far-right rioters then caused further disruption in other parts of the city, including Walton.

The news comes after a weekend of unrest in many parts of the country, including Rotherham, where a Holiday Inn Express was attacked.

As a result of the devastation, four asylum seekers were forced to spend the night in woodland.

Clean-up operations are underway across much of the country after a weekend of unrest.

Right-wing extremists in Middlesbrough also set up “racial checkpoints”, asking drivers “are you white or British”.

A mob of several hundred gathered outside the city’s Jamia Masjid al-Madinah on Sunday afternoon.
men stood in the middle of the road or in front of cars, shouting “Are you white?” and “Are you British?” Another replied “Yes we are”.
