Around 30 people have been injured after a fire broke out on a Ferris wheel at a German music festival.

Photos showed the flaming ride with smoke rising from it at the Highfield Festival on the Stormthaler Lake near Leipzig on Saturday evening.

The fire broke out in two gondolas of the Ferris wheel at around 9pm, and the cause of the blaze is still unknown.

“Those affected are receiving treatment and are recovering well considering the circumstances,” the festival said in a statement.

It added: “We are working closely with the fire brigade, police, rescue and medical services.”

Around 30 people were injured, with 18 currently receiving treatment in hospital.

Festival organisers said four people were injured in the fire and one from a fall.

Media reports said four police officers were among the injured.

The two burning gondolas have been completely gutted and a fire department spokesman said the situation is now under control.

German rapper Ski Agg, who was performing when the fire broke out, said on Instagram he was “shocked and shocked” by the events.

He said: “I’m really disappointed and shocked that the Ferris wheel caught fire during our show at Highfields.”

“It was whispered in my ear that under no circumstances should the show be cancelled, but that we should continue to have a dialogue with you guys first to prevent mass panic.”

“For me, the most important thing was that the situation did not escalate further and fortunately it worked out that way.”

“Thank you for staying calm and probably preventing something much worse.”

“The deciding factor in this was the work.” Rescue workers reacted so quickly that their work was hampered.”

Shortly after 10pm on Saturday, festival organisers announced that despite the events of the previous night, the Ferris wheel had been closed and resumed performances on stage.

They added: “You’re doing a great job.” The show is back on.”
