The United Arab Emirates sent six planes carrying 205 tons of aid to help Lebanese civilians and launched a nationwide charity campaign to support the country, it was announced on Sunday.

More than 2,000 people have been killed in Lebanon since Oct. 8, 2023, more than half of them in the past two weeks. The government has said about one million people are displaced.

The support for displaced Lebanese citizens in Syria is part of the UAE’s “ongoing efforts to help the Lebanese people overcome current challenges,” state news agency Wam reported.

A charity drive in solidarity with the Lebanese people is set to be launched on Tuesday. This was announced by the International Humanitarian Charities Council and comes after the UAE launched an aid initiative.

The “UAE Stands with Lebanon” campaign, launched under the leadership of Sheikh Mohammed, aims to provide the country with a humanitarian aid package worth $100 million. Wam reported that the charity drive aims to involve society, including businesses, in efforts to support the Lebanese people.

“This approach by the UAE is an essential part of its civilised and humanitarian vision of a secure and stable world,” said Sheikh Theab bin Mohammed, director general of the Department of Development and Martyrs’ Family Affairs and chairman of the International Humanitarian and Charity Council.

“The UAE government, its citizens, residents and businesses have always maintained their commitment to providing assistance to those in need, and work closely with international organisations and organisations.”
