Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Tuchel becomes the first German to take charge of the England national team and just the third foreigner to do so after Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson and Italian Fabio Capello.
Premier League coaches were unanimous in praising Thomas Tuchel on Thursday after the German was appointed England head coach, but stressed that English coaches need opportunities at the elite level.
Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Tuchel becomes the first German to take charge of the England national team and just the third foreigner to do so after Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson and Italian Fabio Capello.
Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe and former Chelsea head coach Graham Potter have both been linked with the job.
“I think most people wanted an English coach, at least that’s the general impression I get from the public. “The game is becoming more and more diverse and he certainly has the right track record for the job,” Everton head coach Sean Dyche told reporters.
“It’s not something to be discouraged about, I think that’s the reality of the modern game – not all roads lead to where you want to go,” he added.
Dyche went on to say he doesn’t think he is the right person to be England manager, adding: “I would want to consider it at some point in my career but now is definitely not the right time for me.” Russell Martin, the England-born former Scotland international and Southampton manager, said there are plenty of managers in the country who are qualified for the job.
“For all you England coaches, if you’re not managing a team in the Premier League on a regular basis, it’s really hard to get the opportunity to coach in the Premier League,” Martin said.
“Maybe England coaches don’t get enough recognition or they don’t get enough recognition from the key people… I think as long as (Tuchel) puts in the work, he’s a great coach and I think he’s going to do really good things.”
The job. But I think it will spark a lot of interesting debates and conversations, especially at the FA, because we have a famous coaching education system that brings in people from far and wide, but you can’t appoint someone from that system,” he added.
Welshman Steve Cooper, Leicester City manager and former England Under-17 manager, commented on the hiring of England women’s coach Sarina Wiegman (Netherlands) and England cricket coach Brendon McCullum (New Zealand).
“They’re fantastic coaches,” Cooper said.
“Maybe this is a debate in sport in general. There will always be different opinions on this. There will always be this debate and I don’t think there is a right or wrong opinion. This is a great job. The English FA has appointed a top coach and a top assistant. I’m excited to see what happens next… “I’m a big believer in British culture and I believe in coaching education,” Cooper added.
