The late Anuj Tapan (32) hanged himself from the bedsheet in the prison toilet. He was admitted to the state-run GT Hospital and was pronounced dead during treatment, news agency PTI reported, citing sources. The PTI report added that a report of accidental death will be registered at Azad Maidan police station in south Mumbai.

Who is Anuj Tapan?

Anuj Tapan and another suspect identified as Sonu Subhash Chander are accused of firing several shots at Salman Khan’s Galaxy Apartments. He was arrested in Punjab by the Mumbai Police on suspicion of supplying weapons to accused gunmen Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal. Bandra on April 14th.

Link to Lawrence Bishnoi

The Mumbai Crime Branch has announced that gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his brother Anmol Bishnoi are wanted in connection with the shooting incident. Anmol Bishnoi claimed responsibility for the shooting incident outside Salman Khan’s residence in a Facebook post.

According to the Mumbai Crime Branch, gunmen reached Salman Khan’s house four times before the gunfight. The Crime Branch said they were also keeping tabs on the actor’s farmhouse, adding that they planned to open fire in front of his luxurious Galaxy Apartments as the actor had not visited the farmhouse for several days.

Investigators had earlier said they had also found footprints of Vicky Gupta, one of the arrested gunmen, as he fled from Mumbai to Bhuj in Gujarat after fishing a pistol out of a river on April 22. The Crime Branch said the militants threw the gun into the Tapi river near Surat as they fled.

What Mumbai Police said about Anuj Tapan

Mumbai Police claimed that Anuj Tapan and Sonu Subhash Chander had come to Panvel (Raigad district near Mumbai) on March 15 and handed over two country-made pistols and 38 raw rounds to shooters Sagar Pal and Vicky Gupta.

Besides these four accused, police have declared jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his brother Anmol Bishnoi as wanted accused in the case.

Defence lawyer Ajay Dubey argued before the court that Chander and Tapan had not provided weapons to the other accused or visited Panvel and had no links with the Bishnoi gang. All the allegations against them were baseless and they had been falsely implicated in the case, he argued.

Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal were arrested on April 16 from Mata No Madh village in Gujarat’s Kutch district. Later, the crime branch team allegedly recovered two pistols, magazines and bullets from the Tapi river in Gujarat during a search operation to recover the weapon used in the firing.

Surveillance Notice (LOC) against Anmol Bishnoi

A surveillance notice (LOC) has also been issued against Anmol Bishnoi, younger brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Officials also said that police are likely to take into custody Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently lodged in Gujarat’s Sabarmati jail: and was also contemplating invoking the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the case.
