All flights out of two main terminals at Manchester Airport have been cancelled following a “significant power cut”.

The airport urged passengers travelling from the terminals to stay away until further notice.

The power outage was initially thought to have affected a wider area too, but is now thought to have only affected the airport.

An airport spokesman said all flights from terminals one and two had been cancelled “until further notice”.

Passengers who had already arrived at the airport had to expect significant delays. Pictures show huge queues there this morning.

Some people were even missing their luggage on their planes.

Manchester Airport said passengers departing from terminals one or two were advised not to come to the airport until further notice and to contact their airline for the latest information.

Passengers departing from Terminal 3 may experience delays but should arrive at the airport as normal unless otherwise instructed by their airline, the airport added.

EasyJet, the airline operating from Terminal 1, said that there were “very long queues” at security checkpoints, confusion over baggage handling and passengers could only board with their hand luggage.

We are working closely with the airport team to do our best to minimise disruption. A large number of arriving flights have currently been diverted to other airports. “Therefore, if you are taking passengers from Manchester Airport you should enquire before travelling.

A large number of arriving flights have currently been diverted to other airports.

An Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport was diverted to Birmingham Airport.

The airport said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will endeavour to restore normal operations as soon as possible.” A Virgin Atlantic spokesman said: “There is a widespread power outage at Manchester Airport which means our baggage systems are currently not operational.” It is not working.

“Our teams are working closely with airport authorities to keep customers updated.

“Virgin Atlantic flights are currently departing but there may be some delays.”
