British boxing champion Callum Simpson is heartbroken after his 19-year-old sister Lily Rae died in a car accident in Zante.
The teenager was holidaying with friends on the Greek island last month when the fatal crash occurred. She was airlifted to hospital and spent 10 days in intensive care but sadly passed away from her injuries on August 21st.
Simpson, the British, Commonwealth and WBA Continental champion from Barnsley, wrote on social media: She was flown to Athens and spent 10 days in intensive care but unfortunately, despite the efforts of the medical team, Lily passed away.
“She used to call me often to complain about me being called ‘Callum Simpson’s sister’ but I know she loved the hype and I will continue to make them proud. Love you forever.”
Simpson is currently ranked number two in the British super middleweight division and has won all 15 of his fights, 10 of which have been by knockout.
His last fight was last month in his hometown of Barnsley, when he beat Zach Celli by unanimous points at Oakwell Football Stadium. “It was incredible,” he said after the win. “The most important thing for me was not to get discouraged by the situation.
“I made a lot of mistakes but a win is a win. I’m still a long way from my goal but I’m going in the right direction and I want to prove that I’m the best in my division.” I really want to win the British title, and once I’ve done the nationals I’ll move on.”
