The new banknotes will co-circulate alongside those featuring Queen Elizabeth II.
The portrait of Charles will appear on all four banknotes – the £5, £10, £20 and £50.
In line with guidance from the royal household, the new notes will only be printed to replace those that are worn, and to meet any overall increase in demand.
The approach aims to minimise the environmental and financial impact of the change.
Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England, said: “I am pleased to issue the new King Charles notes. Banknotes have changed.
“Putting these new notes into circulation is evidence of this determination.”
The first banknotes featuring his portrait were presented to the King in April, who described them as: “Very well designed.”
His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, was the first British ruler to be given the honour of having her portrait featured on the £1 note, in 1960.
The public can get the new notes at designated post offices.
The Bank of England has set up temporary facilities to make Charles III inscribed notes available to the public in limited quantities. You can receive them here:
The company launched a postal exchange service from 5th to 30th June allowing customers to exchange up to £300 each.
