Coldplay made history on Saturday night when they took to the iconic Glastonbury stage.

The band became the first band to headline Glastonbury five times. It was the first time a British band had played the Pyramid Stage since 2016, overtaking The Cure, who had previously headlined four times. They were due to take the stage at 9.45pm but arrived late.

Coldplay was definitely worth the wait. The band whisked Little Simz and Burna Boy off the stage to sing a duet with Palestinian singer Elianna. Not only that, towards the end of the set, Coldplay brought Back to the Future legend Michael J. Fox onto the stage.

The actor came onto the stage in a wheelchair in front of an enthusiastic audience and played guitar while Coldplay performed the final few songs of the night. Chris even gave a speech thanking Michael at one point, telling the audience: ‘Thank you to our eternal hero, Michael J. Fox.’

The Millers team at Worthy Farm discovered staff huddled on stage while fans waited for the band to play – a version of Hey Jude as the audience suddenly began singing and cheering. Finally the technicians left the stage and a four-minute countdown was displayed on the screens. Coldplay began their performance at 10pm, 15 minutes late.

But celebrities in the audience remained elated, and Tom Cruise was photographed singing along with the crowd before Coldplay took to the stage. Just before Coldplay appeared, Simon Pegg and Gillian Anderson belted out Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back in Anger.” Fans saw her take to the podium and sang along, teasing the crowd.

The huge crowd didn’t mind Coldplay’s wait at all, as they immediately began playing one of their biggest hits, Yellow. Many in the audience wore wristbands that lit up in time with the stage lights. Fireworks and confetti cannons were also fired into the crowd during the Electric performance.

Frontman Chris Martin spoke in front of thousands of fans for the first time, saying, “Thank you for coming.” Singer-songwriter Victoria Canal sang and played piano with the band during the smash hit “Paradise.”

After the song, Chris showered the audience with praise, asking, “Can you see everyone in the lights?” You’re so beautiful,” he said, singing the chorus of the hit song with the audience. Chris then picked up the piano for the first time and began a performance of “The Scientist” by Coldplay.

The singer addressed the crowd again, saying, “Thank you everyone who came out in front. It’s incredible that no one had to pee,” he added, “And also, everyone who wears their wellies back is welcome.” A lime green laser show. Fans enjoyed the interactive performance.

with wristbands lighting up in sync throughout the set. At one point, Coldplay brought Palestinian singer Elianna onto the stage to make a political statement as she sang a number of songs with the band. She sang We Play with Coldplay and guest Little Simz, and there was also a cameo from Burna Boy.

However, some viewers were distracted by Chris’ accent. One person told X: “What’s up with Chris Martin’s accent?” while another added: “Is it me or is Chris Martin’s accent very American?” One person commented: “Why does Chris Martin speak with an American accent?” and a fourth wrote: “Chris Martin’s accent has become weird when he speaks.” But he lives in Malibu, California, so maybe that’s why. #Glastonbury.” The first guest to appear during the set was Little Simz.

As the set began, fans at home couldn’t help but share their thoughts on social media. Don’t get me wrong, headlining #Glastonbury five times is not something any band or artist should ever do that many times. #Coldplay #ColdplayGlastonbury #Glastonbury24,” and another added: “If #Coldplay were playing in my garden I’d draw the curtains. How can #Glastonbury headline 5 times?!” A third added: “So disappointed for the hundreds of thousands of people who paid good money for a boring headline act. #Glastonbury #Boring #Snoozefest.”

But some fans were excited to see her return to the Farm. One wrote: “#Coldplay are and always will be absolutely incredible. #Glastonbury,” while another wrote: “Coldplay – headlined #Glastonbury 5 times.” A third wrote: “How amazing would Glastonbury be with #Coldplay light up wristbands,” and a fourth added: “Coldplay might not be.” No one can imagine them as Glastonbury headliners, but there’s no doubt they are one of the greatest live acts in the world #Glastonbury.”

Midway through the set, Chris paused the performance and asked fans to watch “A Sky Full of Stars” without their phones, then began the song again after making a request from the audience. Chris asked everyone to “put away their ‘phones’ to make a song about a band with thousands of people in the same band.

We want to experiment with that in the song. This is “Sky Full of Stars” part 2 – all you need is your phone in your pocket and your hands up in the sky… and we can make the whole world fly.”

Frontman Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, drummer Will Champion and bassist Guy Berryman followed a busy Saturday lineup on the Pyramid Stage that also featured Little Simz, Michael Kiwanuka, Keane, Cyndi Lauper and more. Pop star Dua Lipa will headline on Friday night, followed by American singer-songwriter SZA on Sunday night.

Coldplay made their Glastonbury debut in 1999 in the New Bands tent, before returning in 2002, 2005, 2011, 2016 and of course this year as headliners on the legendary Pyramid Stage, playing their coveted Saturday night slot.

“I was so hungry to go there I clearly didn’t know what I was doing,” Chris said in the BBC documentary Coldplay: Our Glastonbury. So we took a quick look around the venue and started where we should, the New Bands tent.

Coldplay will earn a whopping £200,000 for performing at Glastonbury but, like Dua Lipa, who headlined on Friday night, they won’t get the full amount as they will be investing this in the visual spectacle of the show and the hefty production costs. The band are currently touring so they will be raking in some money compared to solo performances, meaning they have less money to spend on rehearsals and rehearsals.

But even with such impressive earnings, it pales in comparison to the popularity of London’s swanky BST Hyde Park party, where top acts rake in almost four times the income of Glastonbury. “It’s great publicity, especially with the guaranteed BBC audience,” one insider revealed.
