Police say the search for Jay Slater in an area of ​​Tenerife has been called off nearly two weeks after his disappearance.

The British teenager from Oswaldtwistle, near Blackburn, Lancashire, has been missing in Tenerife since June 17, when he vanished the morning after a rave party.

The Guardia Civil called for volunteers on Saturday to join a new search operation in the Masca area, close to his last known location.

Slater, 19, had been on holiday with friends on the Spanish island and was last photographed late on June 16 at Papayago, a nightclub hosting the closing night of the NRG festival.

After the event, he got into a car and drove with two men to a small Airbnb in Masca. Police said Saturday that they were “unrelated” to the incident.

His last known location was Teno Park, a rural area in the north of the island, about an 11-hour walk from the accommodation.

The apprentice bricklayer called a friend he was holidaying with at about 8.30am on June 17 to say he had missed the bus and wanted to walk home.

He also told his friend he was lost and needed water as his phone had only 1% charge left.

On Friday, Slater’s friend Brad Hargreaves told ITV’s This Morning he had been on a video call with Slater before he disappeared and heard him driving wild down the road.

He said he could see his friend’s feet sliding down the hill and hear them walking on the gravel.

Meanwhile, Mr Slater’s family have released a blurry image of a person they believe could be the missing teenager, captured on a CCTV camera in a nearby town 10 hours after he was first reported missing.
