The 19-year-old, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was last seen on June 17 while walking to his accommodation during a holiday in Tenerife.

Despite intensive searches of the area by police and rescue teams over the past two weeks, he has not been found.

In a statement from UK overseas missing persons charity LBT Global, the boy’s mother Debbie Duncan said the family are “totally devastated” by his disappearance.

Jay is a normal guy in his third year of university, a very popular young man with lots of friends,” she said.

“We are a very close family and are really shocked by his disappearance.

“Words cannot describe the pain and suffering we are going through. We just want to find him because he was our beautiful boy and he has his whole life ahead of him.” The apprentice bricklayer had arrived on the island with two friends for the NRG music festival on June 13.

His last known location was Teno Park in the countryside in the north of the Canary Islands, around an 11-hour walk from their accommodation in the south.

He had travelled to an Airbnb in the village of Masca and two people who allegedly rented the property were later deemed “unrelated” to the incident.

Ms Duncan praised Spanish police, saying they “worked tirelessly in the mountains where Jay’s last phone call was traced”.

“They (police) searched the area for 12 days, using every possible means,” Ms Duncan added.

“The search in the area has now concluded, but Spanish police are continuing to investigate why Jay went so far from his accommodation.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Spanish authorities who are continuing their investigation.”

On Friday, the Guardia Civil requested rough terrain experts to assist in a “massive search” on Saturday.

The search in and around Maska covered rugged, rocky terrain with ravines, trails and paths.

On Saturday, the Guardia Civil confirmed that searches in the area had been called off after almost two weeks, despite multiple enquiries continuing by investigators.

While the family continues to look forward to developments in the investigation, Ms Duncan asked the media to respect her privacy and said she was aware of the conspiracy theories surrounding the case.

She described the speculation as nothing short of “disgusting”, adding that “the negative comments are very worrying for the family”.

“We are also grateful for the love and support we have received from all over the world”, she added.

“It has not gone unnoticed, especially his home town in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire. As a family we would like the world to respect our privacy at this present time.”
