The monarch publishes his honours list twice a year, once on New Year’s Day and once on his birthday.

A total of 1,077 people from across the UK were named in Friday’s list. Awards organisers said 64 per cent of them had done “outstanding work” in their communities, either as volunteers or paid employees.

The highest honour went to Mr Brown, who was made a Companion of Honour, and Sir Alan was knighted for his work on the campaign that exposed the Post Office Horizon scandal.

Artist Tracey Emin, actress Imelda Staunton and fashion accessories designer Anya Hindmarch were all named Ladies of the List, author Armando Iannucci was made an Order of the British Empire and cyclist Mark Cavendish was knighted.

Other names from showbiz to receive MBEs include singer Rebecca Ferguson, Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon, Countdown’s Suzie Dent and Strictly Come Dancing’s Amy Dowden.

Choreographer Wayne McGregor, composer John Rutter and historian Niall Ferguson were also knighted.

In the sporting world, former cyclist Chris Boardman and former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness were appointed Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), and former England footballer Karen Carney was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

Julia Hoggett, chief executive of the London Stock Exchange, was made a Dame, and investor Bill Browder was knighted for his work on human rights and anti-corruption as head of the Global Magnitsky Justice campaign.

Jim Harrah, chief executive of Revenue and Customs, was also appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, which recognises the services of senior military and civil servants.

The youngest recipient on the list is 20-year-old Shamza Butt, who was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her work as part of the National Citizen Service’s Youth Independent Development Programme.

The oldest living person is Harold Jones, who was made an OBE at the age of 100 after raising funds for the Motor Neurone Disease charity in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands.
