Former One Direction singer Liam Payne has tragically died whilst on holiday in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Officials said his injuries were “fatal”.
The family of former One Direction star Liam Payne has broken their silence following his tragic fall to his death.
The Strip That Down singer was on holiday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and shared snaps and videos from his trip just days before his death. City emergency services spokesman Alberto Crescenti said: “The alarm was raised at 5.04pm local time reporting a person lying in the courtyard of Casa Sur.
“An ambulance arrived at 5.11pm and the man was pronounced dead. “We later found out he was a famous singer. Unfortunately, the injuries he sustained in the fall were fatal. There was no way to revive him,” the family said in a statement paying tribute to the star.
The statement added: “Liam will live forever in our hearts and we will never forget his kind, funny and brave soul. We as a family will support each other as much as we can and ask that everyone has privacy and space at this terrifying time.” An ambulance was outside the hotel building following Liam’s tragic fall. Police were called to the hotel after a man had been assaulted and was possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
A body was discovered in the hotel’s courtyard. The hotel manager was called to the hotel and made the discovery. Liam is believed to have fallen from a height of 13-14 metres and sustained “serious injuries that are not survivable”. City emergency service spokesman Alberto Crescenti said the man had fallen from a height of 40 metres and sustained “serious injuries that are not survivable”.
The local emergency services chief told TN in a statement: “The same team arrived at 5:11pm and confirmed the man’s death. We later found out he was a singer from a music group. Unfortunately, he had sustained non-survivable injuries from the fall and we had no choice but to pronounce him deceased. CPR was not possible. “
Liam had reportedly checked into a hotel alone before his death. City emergency service spokesman Alberto Crescenti said the man had fallen from a height of around 40 metres and sustained “serious injuries that are not survivable”. “The alarm went off at 5:04pm local time reporting a person lying in the courtyard of Casa Sur.
“An ambulance arrived at 5.11pm and the man was pronounced dead. We later found out it was a well-known singer. Unfortunately, the injuries he sustained in the fall proved fatal. There was no way to resuscitate him. An autopsy is currently being carried out as part of the investigation.”
Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency services, confirmed that the singer had fallen in the courtyard of the Casa Sur Palermo hotel. “A few minutes later, emergency teams arrived and confirmed the death of the man, who we later found out was a member of a musical group,” Crescenti told Argentine TV station Todo Noticias. “He suffered life-threatening injuries from the fall. There was nothing we could do.”
Crescenti also confirmed that Liam suffered “extremely serious injuries, including a fractured skull and instant death,” adding that Liam was already dead by the time medical staff arrived. 5pm local time (9pm GMT). Minutes after Liam’s death, fans gathered outside the swanky hotel, lighting numerous candles in memory of the late star.
As local media reported, the 31-year-old man was probably under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Staff at the chic Hotel Casa Sur frantically called 911, pleading for “urgent” assistance. The hotel receptionist told the operator: “We need someone to come.”
After the connection was lost, the receptionist continued: “We don’t know if our guest’s life is in danger. The room has a balcony and we are afraid he might do something,” in a heartbreaking twist, but the receptionist added seconds later: “Please send an ambulance. Just an ambulance.”
The British Foreign Office confirmed that it was in contact with Argentine authorities “regarding reports of a British national’s death.”
Other stars and fans also paid tribute to the late singer, including socialite Paris Hilton, who called the news “very disturbing” and sent her “love and condolences” to friends and family. She tweeted: “So shocking news of @LiamPayne’s death. Sending love and condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace my friend.”
Following Liam’s death, former One Direction hairdresser Lou Teasdale, 41, wrote on her Instagram story: “Hope you’re well,” followed by a holding hands making a heart emoji. And a broken heart. Irish singer and TV presenter Jedward also paid tribute to the star, writing on X/Twitter: “Rest in peace Liam Payne. Condolences to friends and family,” adding: “Sending strength to Cheryl and her son Bear and the whole One Direction family.”
Former X Factor contestant and TV presenter Rylan Clark called his death “tragic” and wrote: “Extremely sad news. V tragic and so young. RIP Liam.” This Morning presenter Dermot O’Leary recalled Liam’s teen years auditioning for X Factor.
Alongside a photo of O’Leary and Payne standing on stage together, he wrote on Instagram: “The worst news. I remember him as a 14 year old turning up to audition on The X Factor, and blowing us away singing Sinatra. He just loved to sing. He was always a joy, had time for everyone, polite, grateful, and was always humble. Sending love and prayers to his family. Dx”
