Paul Scholes has compared Sofian Amrabat, who came on as a substitute in Manchester United’s FA Cup final win against Man City, to Italian star Gennaro Gattuso.

The Moroccan played the full 90 minutes and completed what was expected to be his last game for United with a passing accuracy of 92.6 per cent. The midfielder is on a season-long loan from Fiorentina, but United are unlikely to take advantage of his £21m release clause.

Amrabat has improved in recent weeks but his overall performances since arriving on deadline day have been disappointing, with United initially paying £8m for his loan.

Scholes was impressed with Amrabat’s performance at Wembley after the 27-year-old was selected to play ahead of Casemiro, who could leave the club this summer. Former England and United star Scholes expressed his admiration for Amrabat on Instagram after taking full-time leave.

Scholes compared him to Milan legend Gattuso. Gattuso was known for his ability to speed up attacks and excellent defensive midfield play. “Gattusso looks first class today,” he wrote of a photo of Amrabat winning the FA Cup, adding that a final decision on Amrabat will be taken in the coming weeks.

United are looking for a new midfielder in addition to a central defender and attacker this summer. In fact, if Amrabat does not return and Casemiro is sold, a reference number will likely be required in the center of the park.

Only four players have been excluded from the offer: Alejandro Garnacho, Koby Mainu, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana, while Raphael Varane, Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans and Anthony Martial are set to sign next month. It will expire.
