Nicholas Prosper, 18, was arrested after officers found suspects Juliana Prosper, 48, Kyle Prosper, 16 and Giselle Prosper, 13, “severely injured” shortly before 6am.

They were pronounced dead shortly after being found in Lee Bank, near Wallose Bank Drive. Formal identification is still pending.

Detective Superintendent Rob Hall said: “First and foremost our thoughts go out to the three people and their families who sadly lost their lives yesterday.”

“No formal identification has yet taken place but next of kin of those presumed dead have been informed and are being assisted by specialist officers.

“We ask that you please respect their privacy at this incredibly difficult time.

“Following the discovery of the three bodies yesterday we immediately sent several officers to the scene.

“Shortly afterwards they arrested an 18-year-old man who has been charged with triple murder and several weapons offences.”

Prosper is due to appear at Luton Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Neighbours in the Leebank block, near Wallose Bank Drive, reported hearing an “impact noise” that sounded like a “gunshot” that morning.

Detectives said yesterday they believe the victims knew each other and that “they are not searching for anyone else at this stage”.

Bedfordshire Police said officers recovered a weapon in Bramingham Road.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told MailOnline: “I thought it was return fire from a car but it was only later that I realised someone had been shot.”

Detective Superintendent Rob Hall said: “Our thoughts are with the three families who have lost their lives in this tragic and shocking incident.”

“As part of our investigation we have recovered a firearm on Bramingham Street and enquiries are continuing.”

“We are still in the early stages of our investigation and no formal identification of the victim has yet been made.

`However we assume all those involved know each other and we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

“Our officers will be working around the clock both at the scene and in the local community over the weekend and we encourage anyone with concerns to speak to their local community officer.”
