Meghan’s statement after receiving her new “title” following a visit to Nigeria with Prince Harry has divided royal fans.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited the West African country last month to promote mental health initiatives for soldiers and empower young people in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

During her trip, Meghan was bestowed with her traditional Yoruba name “Adetokunbo” by Olowo, the Yoruba king of Owo.

The Duchess then released a letter saying she would “cherish” the title (which means “the crown returns across the sea”), adding that she considers Nigeria “home”.

Meghan said she was “thanks for the warm welcome to Nigeria. I am deeply touched by your blessing on my Yoruba traditional name “Adetokunbo”.

“I cherish this name and appreciate the trust you have placed in me to bear it with grace and dignity.

“Our visit to Nigeria was important for many reasons, not least because it gave us the opportunity to explore and understand my heritage, which we will pass on to our children.”

“We look forward to returning home soon.”

However, Meghan’s words did not sit well with some royal fans, while others fully supported Prince Harry’s wife.

One user wrote to X: “It’s great to see Meghan embracing her Nigerian heritage. Representation is important and it’s nice to see someone in the spotlight acknowledge that.”

Another opined, “Hugs? No. Just trying to be relevant.”

A third woman added, “Good to know she loves Nigeria, her made up homeland that she’s not from. As promised, if Ms. H is asked to leave the US she can return to Nigeria and join the family of letter-writing princes and princesses there. (sic)”

Finally, a fourth commented, “If you are confident and humble you don’t need to advertise your titles.
