The Reform UK leader backed himself to lead a centre-right opposition if Labour wins the General Election.

General election

Nigel Farage has made it clear that he would like to lead a combined Conservative and Reform party.

The Reform UK leader said he could not lead the Conservative party as it is currently constituted.

But he predicted a new party was likely to be formed after next month’s general election.

Asked if he would rule out leading the Conservative party, the Brexit campaigner told LBC:

But do I believe I could lead a national opposition to a majority Labour party and stand up and hold them to account on the right issues? Yes.”

Asked if he would lead a combined Reform-Conservative party, Mr Farage replied: “I am prepared to lead a centre-right party for the country. “I would defend business, I believe in boundaries and I’m not afraid to stand up for the British people.”

He added that the Conservative party “may be dead”

He said the Reform Party was approaching a “tipping point”. Where will it overtake Rishi Sunak’s party?

He pointed out that a YouGov poll this week showed the Rebels trailing the Conservatives by just one percentage point.

“I think we’re at a tipping point,” Farage said.

He likened the situation to Canadian politics, where a rebel party called Reform replaced the Progressive Conservatives after their election defeat.

The charismatic 60-year-old returned to politics earlier this month as leader of the Reform Party and is fighting the general election in Clacton.
