A plane crashed in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, killing all 62 people on board.
According to airline Vaupass, the twin-engine turboprop plane was en route from Cascavel in the southern state of Paraná to São Paulo’s main airport when it crashed in the town of Vinhedo.
Footage of the circulating on social media shows the plane spiraling into a vertical dive. There were 58 passengers and four crew members on board the
aircraft. Local authorities said there were no survivors.
Authorities said the plane landed in a residential area, but no one was injured on the ground.
Brazilian television station Globonews aired footage of widespread burning areas and smoking debris in a residential area.
Police and fire departments were on the scene and local hospitals were alerted.
According to tracking website Flightradar24, the aircraft was built in 2010 and took off from Cascavel at 11:56 a.m. local time (14:56 GMT). The plane’s last signal was received about an hour and a half later.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva paid tribute to the victims at an event he spoke at.
I want everyone to stand up and observe a minute of silence because I have to deliver some very bad news,” he told the audience.
