Princess Anne is “recovering slowly”, her husband said as he left the hospital after visiting her.

Lieutenant General Tim Lawrence, 69, also said the princess royal will leave “when she is ready”.

He made the comments after spending two and a half hours with his wife at Southmead Hospital in Bristol on Wednesday

The 73-year-old was apparently run over by a horse as she was walking in the grounds of Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire on Sunday evening, suffering minor head injuries and concussion and spending three nights in hospital.

Sir Tim drove his Range Rover to the main entrance of the hospital’s Brunel Building.

He got out of the car carrying a small navy blue bag.

The day before, he had revealed that he had brought her “just a few little snacks from home”.

Answering questions as she was being discharged from hospital on Wednesday, Sir Tim said, “She is gradually recovering”, adding, “She will be discharged when she is ready”. Her husband, former Royal Navy officer Sir Tim, also attended the ceremony.

As a trained rider, she was the first member of the royal family to take part in the 1976 Olympic Games.

She is the King’s right hand and is considered the hardest working member of the royal family. She is known for her dedication to duty and her down-to-earth approach.

Sir Tim has previously thanked doctors, nurses and emergency services staff for their help, saying he and Anne are both “deeply grateful to the medical team and hospital staff for their expert care, and everyone in the emergency services and all of us there. It’s just so amazing.”

“We’ve both been deeply touched by all the kind messages we’ve received from so many people near and far, which means a lot to us,” he added.
