Violent clashes between fans have broken out ahead of the 2024 Euro match between England and Serbia.

Conflicting reports say fighting broke out between Albanian and Serbian supporters, with British fans also getting involved.

Initially, it was reported that the attack in the western city of Gelsenkirchen was carried out by England fans.

However, according to Sky News, German police at the scene said the brawl was between Serbian and Albanian supporters.

British football police, who visited Germany to support the team, also said that only Serbians had been arrested after the brawl.

Footage from the crime scene shows riot police attempting to stop the violence as men continue to throw chairs, tables and glasses at each other.

No fans were seen wearing England jerseys or carrying St George’s Cross flags, but one man, believed to be from Birmingham, suffered a head injury.

A spokesman for England’s Football Police told Sky that they were “aware of an incident in Gelsenkirchen just before England’s match against Serbia” and that “we have arrested several people who our German colleagues now believe to be Serbian fans.”

“At this stage we do not believe any British nationals have been arrested but investigations are ongoing.”

“Our officers are at the scene and have spoken to our German colleagues. Our investigation team is currently reviewing footage of the incident and will apply for a stadium ban if a British national was involved.”

In the video, a man can be heard hiding behind a car on the other side of the road. Hiding, he shouts in English and lights a fire.

“It’s the Serbs! ‘Go, go, go!'” and “Oh my god, they’re going to hit back,” he shouts.

With more than half a million England fans due to descend on Germany over the next month, there are fears that violence could escalate.

The incident took place just after 3.30pm local time, outside the Aleppo Bar in central Gelsenkirchen.

Witnesses said “everything you can imagine” was hurled at dozens of Serbia supporters.

Footage shared on X shows the crowd throwing several chairs and glasses at men sitting outside a bar.

Up to 200 riot police were reportedly called to the scene to quell the clashes.

A young man wearing checkered pants and a black T-shirt is seen covered in blood.

His face is red with cuts to his head and forehead. It is not yet clear if anyone was seriously injured.

Another video shows a man with his hands tied behind his back with a zip tie being arrested and taken to a nearby police car.
