The search for Jay Slater continues for another day in a remote and rugged corner of Tenerife.

The operation to find Jay Slater seems more focused now

What was a massive operation last week now seems more targeted. A group of Guardia civilians tell me they are investigating a particular valley with a water source nearby.

At 8am, flanked by specialised sniffer dogs from Madrid, the officers walk down a path leading to the vineyards.

One of them points to the other side of the rough terrain and explains that special equipment is needed to reach an area that is difficult to cross on foot.

The rescue services have to contend with the weather as well as the landscape.

The changeable conditions we experienced in Teno Rural National Park last week included high temperatures typical of Tenerife, but also cloud cover, strong winds and rain.

On Wednesday, as the wind died down and the rain intensified, a group of vehicles crashed into another depression in the mountain.

The group included members of the Private Security Service, but also a team from the Canary Islands government and local police.

Under close surveillance by the Guardia Civil, the local team monitored the scene for about 45 minutes using three drones.

This multi-agency deployment is one of the hallmarks of the search operation.

Another reason is the reluctance of authorities to comment, despite the many questions surrounding the case – fuelled by online conspiracy theories that have reached fever pitch in recent days.

Spanish authorities have yet to hold a press conference since Mr Slater’s disappearance.

Although the team on the ground refused to confirm whether a drone had been used in connection with a particular trail, the Guardia Civil issued a comment later the same day, describing the operation as “repeated hunting through ravines, roads and paths in rough terrain”.

Although another day in the case is drawing to a close, Mr Slater’s relatives hope that repeated investigations will finally provide answers to his questions.

Mr Slater’s mother, Debbie Duncan, called on the public to pray for her son.

“I have complete confidence in what they’re doing on the ground and the incredible search effort they’re doing with other incredible people on the ground,” she said.

“We’re in a nightmare as a family. There’s been no further news other than Jay is still missing and he’s ignoring social media.”
