Rain had the final say after Scotland threatened an upset against defending champions England in the teams’ abandoned Group B T20 World Cup opener in Barbados on Tuesday.

Scotland’s opening batsmen George Manjhi (41 not out) and Michael Jones (45 not out) batted brilliantly to guide the non-Test nation to 90-0 in a rain-interrupted 10-over innings at Kensington Oval after captain Richie Berrington won the coin toss.

With Scotland at 51-0 in 6.2 overs and the innings halted for nearly two hours, England were left with a revised target of 109 in 10 overs using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. But before England could mount a fightback on the pitch where they won the 2010 T20 World Cup final, another downpour caused the umpire to call off the match and award each team one point.

Scotland’s first T20 match against England ended in frustration with no chance of victory left in their wake. What began as a shock six-run win over their border rivals in a One-Day International in 2018 continues the chase in Edinburgh.

Earlier on the 16th, left-handed Manjhi had hit a hook at England captain and wicketkeeper Jos Buttler off a top edge from Mark Wood but was saved by a no-ball from the fast bowler.

Lancashire-born Jones, coming into the tournament fresh from a spell with English County Durham, scored 14 off three balls from Chris Jordan.

Jones’ huge pulled six damaged the solar panels on the roof of the stand and was followed by two thunderous fours.

When play resumed, Wood and fellow quick Jofra Archer were both bowled out due to the revised limit restricting bowlers to a maximum of two overs.

Both Jones and Manjhi hit leg-spinner Adil Rashid (0-26) for a plethora of sixes, followed by further boundaries.
