The original cast of The Goonies could be back on set within the next few months, as a sequel to the Hollywood classic was recently “confirmed.”

Forty years after the 1985 film’s release, a second installment of The Goonies has reportedly been greenlit.

The popular 1985 adventure comedy was directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg.

According to The Sun, the original cast could reunite next summer to start filming ahead of a theatrical release in 2026.

Sean Astin (Michael “Mikey” Walsh)

Star actor Sean, 53, followed his childhood role in The Goonies with some of Hollywood’s most memorable roles.

He appeared in Rudy in 1993 and played the great hobbit Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings trilogy from 2001 to 2003.

The actor also appeared in the second season of Stranger Things and made a brief appearance in the third episode of the first season.

He also served as the narrator for the Netflix series “Epic Tales of Captain Underpants.”

Sean left Hollywood behind to become the first Middle-earth resident to complete an Ironman triathlon.

Josh Brolin (Brandon “Brand” Walsh)

The Goonies launched the 56-year-old Josh into Hollywood, where he appeared in classic films before starring in 2007’s No Country for Old Men.

He was nominated for an Oscar for Milk in 2008, and went on to star in Inherent Vice in 2015 and Hail, Caesar! in 2016.

A few years later, Josh turned his attention to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing the warlord Thanos in the Avengers film series.

In 2018, he played a major role as the warlord Thanos in the Avengers film series.

Josh’s most recent successes include the Oscar-winning films Dune (2021) and Dune: Part II (2024), in which he played the role of Gurney Halleck.

Corey Feldman (Clark “Mouth” Devereaux)

Before landing the role of Mouse, Corey, 53, had already made a name for himself as a child star in Hollywood, appearing in films such as Stand by Me (1986) and The Lost Boys (1987).

Looking back on his time with The Goonies, Corey said at a 2013 reunion:

“Harrison Ford came and walked through the caves with us.

The actor voiced Slash in the animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from 2013 to 2017.

Corey, lead singer of Truth Movement, has released solo music, including the 2022 hit single “Without U.”

Corey released a documentary in 2020 about the sexual abuse he suffered as a child actor in the 1980s.

Jeff Cohen (Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen)

He made film history as Chunk in The Goonies.

In 2015, Jeff, 50, revealed that losing his baby fat had put an end to his acting career.

The former child star, now a successful lawyer in the entertainment industry, had to leave Hollywood for good when he could no longer apply for “roles for fat kids.”

“There were basically four fat kids in town, so it was always the same people coming to audition,” the 40-year-old lawyer said.

“It was survival of the fittest. But once I hit puberty, that was the end of my career. I went from being a fat guy to a bigger guy and I stopped getting roles.”

Jeff continued, “It was awful. My first love was acting, but puberty had other plans. It was a forced resignation. I didn’t give up on acting.

Sitting in his Beverly Hills office, now a partner at his own law firm, Cohen Gardner LLC, Cohen makes no attempt to hide his Goonies past.

Ke Huy Quan (Richard “Data” Wang)

Actor Ke Huy Quan won an Oscar in 2023, nearly four decades after he rose to fame in ’80s classics like “The Goonies.” And “Indiana Jones” first brought him fame.

The 53-year-old has proven himself a true Hollywood darling after his role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

However, although he has worked as an actor for decades, he has never won a major award for his work.

In fact, he became an actor at the tender age of 12, playing the lead role of the sidekick to Harrison Ford in the film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Although The Temple of Doom became a worldwide hit, some viewers felt the film was too dark and violent, and it was pivotal in the introduction of the PG-13 rating for films that were too adult for children but not 1R. The rating was subjective.

After appearing in the Steven Spielberg-directed film, Quan starred the following year in the cult film The Goonies, based on a Spielberg novel and directed by Richard Donner.

But despite prominent roles in two major cultural films, opportunities for Vietnamese-born actors began to dry up in the late 1980s and 1990s.

After giving up on an acting career in the late 1990s, Quan enrolled in the University of Southern California’s film program to explore new opportunities.

He worked as a fight choreographer on X-Men in 2000 and was assistant director on acclaimed Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai’s sci-fi romance 2046.

After the success of Crazy Rich Asians, Quan felt that Hollywood was more open to Asian actors and began actively pursuing projects again.

Martha Plimpton (Stephanie “Steph” Steinbrenner)

Martha, 53, was 15 when she starred in the 1985 classic The Goonies.

Since then, she has appeared in numerous films and features, including Raising Hope and A Mad Family.

Plimpton grew up surrounded by show business.

Her grandfather was John Carradine, and both of her parents, Keith Carradine and Shelley Plimpton, are actors.

She is also a trustee of A is For, a charity that advocates for “women’s reproductive rights and the stigma surrounding abortion care.”

Kelly Green (Andrea “Andy” Carmichael)

Kelly, 57, was 17 when she played cheerleader Andy and now runs her own production company.

In the 1980s, Kelly appeared in Summer Rental (1985), Lucas (1986) and Three Boys (1987).

She also appeared in TV series such as In the Heat of the Night, Emergency Room, Mad About You and Law & Order: SVU.

Her last film appearance was Complacent: The Return (2012) before she started her own production company.

Speaking about his role in The Goonies in 2023, Kelly said: “It was true.”

I think that’s one of the reasons people still enjoy it today. He was played by the late John Matuszak.

Before appearing in The Goonies, John Matuszak was a towering American football star, standing 1.93 meters tall.

He played for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders from 1976 to 1982, after which an injury ended his career and he took up acting.

Matuszak was known for his “bad boy” lifestyle. In his autobiography, he said that he used drugs and abused alcohol during his time in the NFL.

Sadly, he died of a drug overdose at the age of 38 shortly after the film’s release in 1989.
