Ellyse Perry and Meg Lanning are two of the most inspirational players in women’s cricket.
Elise Perry shares her courage at an event to help those struggling with the same problem, after former Australian national team captain Meg Lanning recently revealed she suffers from an eating disorder praised.
Perry and Lanning have been her two pillars of the Australian Women’s Cricket team for the past decade. The latter resigned last November, but Perry continues to play for her national team. Lanning and Perry have won a whopping seven world titles between them. The former cricketer revealed in an interview earlier this month that she is an unhealthy exercise addict and doesn’t eat enough food to fuel herself. She said these bad habits led to her retirement from international cricket.
“(Exercise) has become an obsession because it’s a mental escape. I would throw in my headphones (and) I wouldn’t carry my phone. I carried my Apple Watch with me and listened to music. No one could contact me. I loved it because I felt like I was in control. It felt like I was eating it. I was still eating. But I realize it better now. I couldn’t eat enough. If you’re lucky, you might eat several meals a day if they weren’t important. It didn’t start out on purpose. It’s kind of become the new normal,” Lanning said on the Howie Games Podcast.
Speaking about Lanning’s revelations, legendary all-rounder Perry said the whole team supported her and praised her courage in coming out in the open and voicing the issue.
“As a teammate of Megs (Lanning), I think the whole team is incredibly supportive of her first and foremost and I really hope that she’s OK and doing well. That’s the most important thing,” Perry said at the MCG to mark the launch of the CA Action Plan for Women and Girls, which sets out significant growth targets for women’s cricket over the next decade.
“She’s obviously incredibly brave to speak out about these things and I’m sure it will help others who have been through something similar before. It’s obviously very difficult as a teammate to hear and know that. “Someone who you’ve played so closely with for a long period of time has had some issues. “But at the same time, I really hope she’s doing well and that she gets the proper care that she needs,” Perry added.
Lanning retired from international cricket last year but continued to play in franchise tournaments. She recently led Delhi Capitals to the final in the second season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) earlier this year. Perry was the top run-getter in the tournament with 347 runs in nine matches at an average of 69.40 points, while Lanning was second with 331 runs and 36.78 points.
