The Indian captain will step away from the format after India’s victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados.
Rohit Sharma confirmed that he played his last international match in this format after India’s victory over South Africa in the T20 World Cup.
“That was my last match too,” the captain said in the post-match press conference, referring to Virat Kohli’s announcement of his retirement from T20Is.
“I have enjoyed this format immensely ever since I started playing it. It will be good when the time comes to say goodbye to this format. I loved every moment of it.”
“That’s what I wanted, I wanted to win the Cup,” he said, addressing the crowd and drawing applause from the media.

He had earlier dedicated the T20 World Cup victory to coach Rahul Dravid in gratitude for his contribution to the sport.
“Of all the things he has done for Indian cricket over the last 20, 25 years, this is the only thing he has left.
“On behalf of the entire team, I am very happy that we can do this for him.”
And he couldn’t praise his players enough, particularly referring to the retiring Virat Kohli and his bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah. “For me and for Team India, we are very, very grateful. “
When asked if this was the best moment of his career, Rohit agreed that it was definitely one of the highlights so far.
“It must have been a great time, I can say that. And it was because I really wanted to win. Every run I have scored in the last few years is important but I don’t really care about the statistics.
“Winning matches for India and winning trophies for India – that’s what I always look forward to.”
