Tories still have a lot of hard work to do, a poll shows

If opinion polls are to be believed, the Conservatives are expected to suffer a Portillo-style defeat, with big-name MPs losing their seats, including Rishi Sunak, who was first elected in Richmond in 2015.

But is all hope really lost for the Conservatives? I visited two market towns in his constituency to find out what people there think about his chances of retaining his MP and running the country.

Stokesley was my first stop, a pretty market town surrounded by farms and greenery. The first thing I noticed was that there were more Labour posters and signs than I’d ever seen in the area.

And local people seem to be at least quite divided on whether to vote for Rishi.

Graham Clark, 71, lives in the city and is now retired after working as a consultant for the NHS.

He said: “I think there are lots of them… you can add any you like.”

Graham is undecided about who to vote for, but he won’t be voting for Rishi. She added: “I don’t know anyone who can say a good word about him or the government in general.

But Carol Baker, 71, a former secretary and childless widow who also lives in the city, added: “I’m all in for Team Rishi and have already cast my vote.

She said: “I voted for Rishi and I think he’s a good person and he’s done a lot for Stokesley.” She added: “For Stokesley, Rishi is the man.”

Next I visit Powell’s, the butchers on the High Street. They have really good food. The two staff members don’t see eye to eye on Rishi at all.

Alison Allinson, 61, said: “I voted for Rishi and I think he’s a good person and he’s done a lot for Stokesley.” My family has always voted Conservative.

But she admits she believes it will be “all Labour”, and her colleague, who asked not to be named, will support the Labour initiative.

The next man is also less enthusiastic. Martin Lloyd, 69, is from nearby Yarm and is a former chartered surveyor.

Martin said he had already voted by postal vote but it “was not for the Conservatives”, and cited partygate and Brexit as his top issues.

Business owner Derek Slack, 79, is married to Linda and has two children and four grandchildren. They live in Stokesley and are Rishi supporters.

“I think Mr Rishi will keep his seat here,” he said, adding, “Who wants the country to be run by Labour?”

After my trip to Stokesley, I was curious to know what the residents of Rishi’s wealthy market town of Northallerton thought. He owns a fine mansion in the village of Kirby Sigston, just four miles from the town.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, but with his posters clearly visible on the way into town, I definitely felt like I was in Rishi’s territory.

Pub gossip was also in support of Rishi, with one woman telling me she loves the Wetherspoons breakfasts she gets in the town. I was keen to speak to younger voters, so I chatted to the young woman who runs a sandwich shop.

Zanica Wallis, 19, owner of Dolce Deli, has taken fitness classes with Rishi and his wife in the city and said they have always been very friendly.

She said: “I know the Reform Party are doing good things but it’s just going to split the vote.”

Zanica has been particularly impressed with his efforts to keep emergency care at Freelage Hospital. Keith Blewitt, 68, and his wife Denise, 64, are from near Darlington but are also ardent Rishi fans.

“He’s brought the Treasury to Darlington,” Keith says of Rishi’s move of part of the Treasury to Teesside.

Dennis said: “He has brought a lot of jobs to Darlington and regularly comes to work from his office.

Retired teacher Susan Jenkins said she believes Rishi and the 93-year-old woman are the right people for the job. Father Stanley completely agrees. They both live in the area.

She said: “I’ll put it this way – Rishi is one of the best constituency councillors I’ve ever met.”

Susan also cited the rescue of the local hospital and its response to flooding in the area as reasons to support him.

Father Stanley said: “I think Rishi has done a fantastic job and I think he’ll get there.” Conservatives give. However, it remains to be seen whether this will be replicated across the country on Thursday.
