Officers responded to an area of grass near Shipcoat Lane at around 6.10am on Sunday after a man became concerned about his safety.

Neil Selkirk, 54, was found dead from injuries sustained in the assault.

Two men, aged 39 and 33, were arrested close to the crime scene and are now charged with murder.

They are due to appear before South Tyneside magistrates today.

“Neil has been at the forefront of our minds from the beginning and we have been absolutely committed to ensuring that those responsible for his death are identified and convicted for their crimes.

“Two suspects must now appear in court charged with murder.

“As always, we would like to thank the public for their continued co-operation and patience and ask that you respect the ongoing legal process.

“There is absolutely no place for violence in our communities and we remain prepared to use all tactics at our disposal to ensure swift justice is meted out.”
