The cricket fraternity heartily congratulated Indian Captain Rohit Sharma as the legendary batsman celebrated his 37th birthday on Tuesday, April 30.
Rohit is one of the greatest batting talents ever to have emerged from the cricketing powerhouse India. After making his international debut against Ireland in an ODI in June 2007, the right-hand batsman played some good shots in the middle order, but his true potential unfolded when he became India’s full-time opener in the ICC (International Cricket Council) Champions Trophy 2013.
Through 262 ODIs, Rohit has scored 10,709 runs at an average of 49.12 and a strike rate of 91.97. He has scored 55 half-centuries and 31 centuries in the 50-over international format.
Rohit is also the only player to have scored three times in his double century in ODI cricket. The highest individual score in an ODI was also given to a Mumbai batsman. He achieved this feat in 2014 when he scored an incredible 264 off 173 balls against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Rohit made a phenomenal start in his Test career in 2013, scoring centuries in his first two innings against West Indies. However, in the years that followed, Rohit was guilty of throwing away his wickets after a good start. However, things changed when he moved up to the top of the innings in 2019. The elegant batsman has become a symbol of consistency and can be proud of the numbers he has already amassed in red-ball cricket.
After 59 Tests, Rohit has scored 4,138 runs at an average of 45.47 with 17 fifties and 12 tons. His highest score was 212 off 255 balls, which he achieved against South Africa at Ranchi in 2019. This is his only score of over 200 in Test cricket.
Rohit has done better as a batsman in his T20I cricket than in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
After making his T20I debut in India’s win over England in the 2007 T20 World Cup, Rohit played 151 matches and scored 3,974 runs at an average of 31.29 and a strike rate of 139.98. He has scored 29 fifties and fifties in his T20I career so far. He hit his 190 sixes, the most by a player in the shortest format of the game.
