Newcastle United scored inside 19 seconds and won a penalty shootout against Nottingham Forest to progress to Wednesday’s Carabao Cup, a match that saw Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali return after a 10-month suspension.
Tonali was involved in the build-up to Newcastle’s Joe Willock’s very early goal at the City Ground and played 62 minutes before being substituted. Forest had already equalised through Jota Silva.
The second-round match ended as usual at 1-1 and went into a shootout, where Newcastle, missing Forest’s Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi, won 4-3. Sean Longstaff converted the decisive penalty.
Tonali moved to Newcastle from AC Milan in the 2023 off-season but made just 12 appearances before receiving a long-term ban from the Italian Football Federation in October for betting on both Milan and another Italian club, Brescia, for those teams.
The Independent Regulatory Commission also added a further two months to Tonali’s suspension until the end of the season.
In another Premier League match, Jarrod Bowen inadvertently scored a controversial goal in the 88th minute to give West Ham a 1–0 home win over Bournemouth.
Mohamed Kudus’ shot appeared to have deflected off Bowen’s arm. The goal was disallowed and, as there was no video review at this point in the contest, the goal could not be cancelled. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola was extremely annoyed, complaining to the fourth official in the technical area.
The only surprise of the night, and indeed of the whole of the second round, was the elimination of first division side Ipswich against fourth division side AFC Wimbledon. AFC Wimbledon won 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Southampton needed added-time goals from James Bree and Cameron Archer to beat second-tier Cardiff 5-3 in a wild game, while Wolverhampton beat second-tier Burnley 2-0 with a goal from Gonzalo Guedes. Brentford beat fourth-tier Colchester 1-0 away.
