The Premier League said that Matthijs de Ligt’s foul on Danny Ings was enough to award West Ham a controversial penalty against Manchester United.
After Casemiro Crisencio cancelled out Somerville’s opener, the Red Devils looked headed for a point at the London Stadium. But things went the other way when the hosts were awarded a penalty in added time.
VAR stepped in after a collision between de Ligt and Ings was ignored by the on-field referee. A review was recommended, the original decision was overturned and West Ham was awarded the penalty.
And the Premier League explained the controversial decision, saying in a statement on Sunday: “The referee did not award West Ham a penalty for a foul by De Ligt on Ings. VAR determined that there was sufficient contact with Ings’ lower leg to recommend an on-field check. The referee overturned the original decision and awarded the penalty.”
It is the Red Devils’ fourth defeat of the season and leaves manager Erik ten Hag in an uncomfortable position. United are languishing in 14th place with just 11 points from nine games.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe may have to make a decision on Ten Hag’s future sooner or later. The Red Devils are back in action this week, hosting Leicester at Old Trafford in a Carabao Cup showdown.
They will be back in action at the weekend to take on Chelsea. Speaking of the Blues, they were also embroiled in added-time controversy at the weekend.
Enzo Maresca’s side beat Newcastle 2-1 with goals from Nicholas Jackson and Cole Palmer. However, after Christopher Nkunku was fouled, Chelsea looked to have a chance to grab victory from the penalty spot.
A penalty was awarded but VAR had their say and after review the decision was overturned. The Premier League further stated: “The referee awarded Chelsea a penalty for a foul by Vern on Nkunku. VAR considered that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned his original decision and play continued with the ball.”
