UK storm alert: Met Office issues urgent 11-hour thunderstorm warning as chaos expected

The Met Office said the warnings had been updated because thunderstorms were expected to continue throughout this morning.

The Met Office has issued an 11-hour warning after heavy rain and thunderstorms battered Britain overnight.

Meteorologists have issued two yellow warnings for thunderstorms across southern and south-west England, one of which has been extended due to severe weather.

Areas affected include London and nearby towns in the west, including Oxford, Reading and Slough. In the east, this applies to Southend-on-Sea, Luton, Essex, Thurrock and parts of Hertfordshire.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said in an update that the warning has been extended until 10am as the risk of thunderstorms remains.

“However, the thunderstorms are expected to continue into the morning and then gradually move westwards.
