Rishi Sunak has admitted a “disappointing” series of local election results after the Conservatives suffered a slew of defeats across the country.

But the embattled Prime Minister insisted he was “focused completely on the job at hand” and that Labour had still not done enough to be on track to win the general election.

Voters headed to the polls on Thursday in contests for 107 councils as well as mayoral elections.

Pollsters have warned that the Conservatives could lose 500 city council seats, the party’s worst performance in local elections in 40 years.

But in a glimmer of hope, Tory Ben Houchen was re-elected as Mayor of Tees Valley.
